Egon-Stahl-Award in Gold

The Egon-Stahl-Award in Gold is the highest scientific honour of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA). It can be awarded every third year beginning in the year 1999.

The Egon-Stahl-Award in Gold acknowledges the outstanding scientific lifetime work of a research scientist who has been closely attached to Pharmaceutical Biology (Pharmacognosy, Chemistry of Natural Products), in its whole range, through his/her scientific work.

The Egon-Stahl-Award in Gold is endowed with € 5.000.

Prof Dr. em. Giovanni Appendino

In 2023 the jury decided to bestow the most prestigious award of our Society, the Egon Stahl-Award (ESA) in Gold, to one of the most distinguished and innovative natural product scientists worldwide, Giovanni Appendino, Emeritus Professor of the University of Eastern Piedmont in Novara, Italy, for his outstanding life-time achievements combining natural products isolation and structure elucidation with medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.

Prof. Robert Verpoorte

The GA has pleasure in dedicating the Egon Stahl-Award 2017 with a gold medal to Prof. Dr. Robert Verpoorte in recognition of his lifetime achievements, a leading and creative scientist in exploring new ideas and concepts in the field of in plant cell biotechnology, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in plants and phytochemistry, NMR based metabolomics, metabolic engineering, and „Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES)”.

Prof Dr. A. Douglas Kinghorn

The prestigious Egon Stahl-Award in Gold 2020 is bestowed to Prof. Dr. A. Douglas Kinghorn in recognition of his leading role in the natural product drug discovery, in particular those with anticancer, cancer chemopreventive, and substances with a sweet taste and taste-modifying agents. The Egon Stahl-Award in Gold recognises the outstanding scientific lifetime work of a research scientist who has been closely linked to Pharmaceutical Biology (Pharmacognosy, Chemistry of Natural Products), through his scientific career. The Award is the highest and most prestigious scientific honour of the Society for Medicinal Plant Research (GA).

The GA has pleasure in dedicating the Egon Stahl-Award 2011 with a gold medal to Prof. Dr. Otto Sticher in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the area of medicinal plant research and natural product analysis, and to pharmaceutical biology as an academic discipline.

The Egon-Stahl-Award 2005 in Gold has been awarded to Prof. Dr. Detlef Gröger, Halle, in recognition of his extraordinary lifework in the area of pharmaceutical biology and natural products chemistry, in particular by his highly valuable contributions to the research on the biochemistry of secondary metabolism in plants and microorganisms.

The GA has the pleasure in dedicating the Egon Stahl-Award 2008 with a gold medal to Prof.Dr. Max Wichtl in recognition of his extraordinary lifework in the area of pharmaceutical biology and natural products chemistry, of his outstanding competence in and great impact on the development of German and European herbal monographs and in particular of his worldwide published books on Herbal Drugs and Herbal Medicinal Products.
